I spend a lot of time by the sides of roads with a tripod, camera, and a very large lens. Curiosity eventually gets the best of regular passersby as well as the occasional tourist, and I get asked some variation of "What are you looking at?" Usually, the answer is "That bird way over there." Then I try to explain why I wait to snap a picture of that bird that is better than the hundreds I have already taken.
Lending credence to the theory that we are drawn to that which we are not, I admire grace and beauty, qualities I find best expressed in wildlife. Like most humans, I am inclined to proselytize my vision of truth. But not everyone stops to ask, and few of my interrogators are willing to stick around long enough to see the bird fly. So I try to record what I see in order to share it with others. I will never capture all that I see, much less all that there is in the world. But if even one of my glimpses does sufficient justice to inspire one person to appreciate and value one wild creature, the waiting was worth it.
Now, thanks to the efforts of the charming and talented Judy Sullivan, I can give this web address to those who ask about my pictures. Some even ask if they can be purchased. Yes, that can be arranged.
